As a nonprofit organization operating for charitable, educational, and scientific purposes, TCRC is helping expand research opportunities for cancer patients in Northwest Ohio while building a more collaborative future for personalized cancer care.

TCRC exists to support the development of infrastructure and personnel for a robust precision therapy oncology clinical trial program. That work creates the foundation needed to expand therapeutic research management and improve access to more personalized cancer treatment.
Precision therapy focuses on the genetic and molecular characteristics of a patient’s tumor, helping identify treatment strategies designed to better match the biology of each individual cancer.

OUR STORY
A bold new chapter in cancer research
On February 5, 2024, Taylor Cancer Research Center was established following a generous gift from Stephen Taylor of the Taylor Automotive Family and his family in honor of Julie Taylor. Their support helped launch a new era in precision therapy research and clinical trial growth for Northwest Ohio.
THE TAYLOR FAMILY STORY
A personal commitment to bringing advanced care closer to home
The Taylor Automotive family has been a generous philanthropic presence in Northwest Ohio for several decades.
Julie Taylor, the matriarch of the family, bravely battled multiple myeloma and received her treatment at The Toledo Clinic Cancer Centers. After her passing, her husband Steve Taylor and the Taylor family wanted to show appreciation for the care she received and honor Julie in a way that would benefit cancer patients in this region and beyond.
They also knew friends who were battling cancer and traveling great distances to receive the care they needed. Their goal was to help bring that same type of cutting-edge treatment closer to home.
Around that time, Dr. John Nemunaitis, a nationally recognized leader in precision medicine, had returned to the region and connected with physicians at The Toledo Clinic Cancer Centers who shared a similar vision. When Steve Taylor and his family were introduced to Dr. Nemunaitis, they immediately recognized the promise of precision medicine and the opportunity to build something meaningful for Northwest Ohio.
With that shared vision, the Taylor family helped fund the startup of what would become the Taylor Cancer Research Center.

Who helped build it
The vision was brought to life through the leadership and collaboration of Timothy Kasunic, Rex Mowat, RC Phinney, and John Nemunaitis, who serves as Chief Scientific Officer and President of the TCRC Board.
How it began
TCRC was founded to create the infrastructure needed for a robust precision therapy oncology clinical trial program and to expand research opportunities for cancer patients in the region.
Where it lives today
TCRC is housed within The Toledo Clinic Cancer Center in Maumee, Ohio, where it supports research growth, patient care, and precision therapy program development in one coordinated setting.

TCRC has engaged with regional healthcare leaders, including ProMedica and Mercy Health, to support medical, surgical, and scientific collaboration and to strengthen the growth of a high-quality clinical trial program in Northwest Ohio.
This regional approach helps connect local patients, physicians, and health systems to a larger mission centered on innovation, access, and personalized cancer care.
