TCRC Clinical Trial Participant Shows Strong Response to Personalized Precision Therapy

A participant receiving care through Taylor Cancer Research Center has experienced a strong response after entering an experimental precision therapy clinical trial for advanced metastatic melanoma.

The 78-year-old participant had multiple metastatic lesions and cancer-related pain that made walking difficult. After available standard melanoma treatments failed to stop the disease, she entered a clinical trial at Taylor Cancer Research Center based on a unique cancer-driving molecular signal identified through the research program.

She began the experimental precision therapy on August 13, 2024.

After more than a year of treatment, the participant continued to show a meaningful response. One resistant lesion was later identified and treated with radiation therapy and cryoablation. Sequential molecular testing of blood samples also confirmed clearance of the molecular driver mutation being followed by the research team.

Researchers at Taylor Cancer Research Center are continuing to work with the scientific team behind the investigational therapy to better understand the single resistant disease site and use those findings to strengthen the treatment approach for future patients.

A Local Clinical Trial Option

Before entering the trial, the participant had been told she would need to travel to Detroit or Columbus to explore additional clinical trial options. She preferred to remain closer to home while continuing treatment.

The newly established clinical trial program at Taylor Cancer Research Center provided an option in the Toledo area that was specifically aligned with the genetic characteristics of her cancer.

The participant shared that after several surgeries and drug treatments failed to stop the melanoma from spreading, the TCRC trial offered a treatment designed around her cancer’s genetic makeup.

She described the therapy as lifesaving and expressed gratitude to Dr. R.C. Phinney and the Taylor Cancer Research Center team for helping make the treatment available locally.

A Personalized Approach to Cancer Treatment

Precision therapy focuses on the genetic and molecular abnormalities that drive a cancer’s growth and spread.

Through comprehensive gene profiling of blood or cancer tissue, researchers can identify molecular signals that help guide the selection of therapies designed to target the biology of an individual patient’s cancer.

At Taylor Cancer Research Center, comprehensive gene profiling is also used to help identify whether a patient has the molecular signal required for a specific clinical trial.

Treatment response can then be followed through sequential molecular testing of blood, giving clinicians another way to assess effectiveness throughout treatment.

Bringing Innovative Cancer Research Closer to Home

Taylor Cancer Research Center was established following a $1 million gift from the Taylor Automotive Family to support a precision therapy program within The Toledo Clinic Cancer Centers in Maumee.

Steve Taylor said the gift was inspired by the experience of his late wife, Julie Taylor, who sometimes had to travel far from home to receive innovative treatment during her battle with cancer.

The goal was to help other patients access advanced research and treatment opportunities closer to home in Northwest Ohio.

The program was developed with oncology leadership from Dr. Timothy Kasunic, Dr. R.C. Phinney, and Dr. Rex Mowat. Dr. John Nemunaitis was recruited to establish Taylor Cancer Research Center and bring additional precision therapy research opportunities to the region.
